FAQs
How do I become a member of the Laurel Highlands Branch?
As a member to the QDMA you are automatically a member of the local branch.  Anyone can participate in branch activities.
What is the QDMA?
It is an international nonprofit wildlife conservation organization dedicated to ethical hunting, sound deer management and preservation of the deer-hunting heritage.  Among QDMA's 50,000+ members are more than 3000 of the nation's leading wildlife and forestry professionals.  As such, QDMA is widely regarded as the most respected whitetail organization in the United States.
Is the QDMA part of the PGC?
No.  The QDMA is an international organization that promotes sound deer management on multiple levels including in Pennsylvania.  The QDMA promotes education, sound harvest strategies and habitat improvement to better the environment and hunting experience.
What are the benefits of becoming a member?
As a member you get a subscription to "Quality Whitetails" an educational magazine produced 6 times per year.  You also get opportunities to participate in local branch activities and attend deer management seminars and short courses.  New members also get some basic guides and a vehicle decal.
What activities does the LH QDMA get involved with?
In addition to regular meetings  the branch holds intermittent educational events and an annual banquet.  See Branch Highlights on this web site.
How often do they meet?
Meeting vary by time of year but typically are 6 times per year.
How does QDM benefit a person who does not own land?
Sound deer management practices benefit everyone including the non-hunter.  Habitat improvement practices are supported and promoted by the branch on local public hunting ground.  In addition, as more and more property is being managed an understanding of QDM principles may open more opportunities for access to lands.
How do you determine the age of a deer?
Deer can be aged pre-harvest by field judging and tooth wear post-harvest.  Jaw bone aging, although an inexact science, can be a useful tool to help managers determine the age of the deer.  A more exact determination can be by the cementum annuli method where the tooth is cut and stained at a lab.
How do I go about starting to manage a property?

Start by joining the QDMA!  Learn more by checking out www.QDMA.com, attending educational seminars, and reading "Quality Whitetails" magazine.

Where do I find professional help for my management plan?

Develop contacts through the branch and learn more at educational seminars.  Take a look at our "Links" section (coming soon) of this web site.

How do I work with the neighbors to promote QDM?
Develop working relationships based on trust and share management plans and goals.  The QDMA has resources available through QDMA's Website.  New members receive a booklet on developing successful cooperatives.
What is a sanctuary?
This is a protected area that provides security and cover for the deer.  It is one of the most significant changes that will improve deer activity and quality on your property.
How do you feed the deer?
The QDMA promotes improving deer nutrition by utilizing native vegetation, proper forest management activities, and food plots.  Baiting or feeding deer can spread disease and create problems.
