AMPAC WILDLIFE PERFECT
Wildlife Food Plot Seed Mixes & Other Products and Services
My E Z SOW line and now the AMPAC WILDLIFE PERFECT line is a selection of food plot seed mixes that I began testing and developing in 1988, and am continually testing, improving and expanding. These mixes were developed especially for the mountainous regions of PA and other parts of the Northeast that are characterized by harsh climate extremes and soils that are generally highly acidic, infertile, rocky, often poorly drained (due to high clay content) and often disturbed to the point that little top soil remains (log landings, strip mines). These areas often harbor high deer populations, so anything planted must also be resistant to heavy grazing. The following mixes have been proven under those conditions and will perform even better on good soils or those that are properly limed and fertilized. Pre-planting weed control and maintenance by mowing and/or selective herbicides will prolong the life of your plots. All the following perform best with at least ½ day of sunlight. Allowing livestock to graze heavily on pure Legume or Brassica plots could cause bloat or other digestive problems.

WILDLIFE GRAZING MIX - perennial An improved version of the original QUICK START WOODLAND MIX, introduced in 1992. Improved again in 2006 with the addition of CHICORY and HUNT CLUB BRAND White Clover. No grasses. 17 years of proven reliability. My best seller since 1998. It contains 2 annual clovers for a quicker start – Spring or Fall – along with 2 perennial Clovers and Birdsfoot Trefoil for season long desirability and palatability, nutritional content and persistence. It’s THE seed mix for wildlife habitat improvement on poorer soils and/or remote areas that are inaccessible for large scale tilling, liming, fertilizing or mowing. Great for logging roads, log landings, skid trails, clearcuts, old fields and reclaiming strip mines and Gas well sites and pipelines. Frost seed or Broadcast 12 to 15 lbs. per acre or drill 8 to 12 lbs. per acre in Spring or Fall
WILDLIFE CHICORY/CLOVER MIX - perennial A clover/chicory mix designed specifically for larger fields and better soils. Incorporates new strains of high quality Red and White (Hunt Club Brand) forage clovers designed for wide adaptability and Maximum longevity, seed vigor, disease resistance, palatability and nutrition. Chicory provides a highly preferred and nutritious warm season component. Frost seed or Broadcast 12 - 15 lbs. per acre or drill 8 to 12 lbs. per acre in Spring or Fall. Also available with “Rack Builder” Grazing Alfalfa.
CHICORY – long lived perennial. I highly recommend adding CHICORY to any perennial cool season planting. Chicory is a deep rooted, broad-leaved forb that withstands heat and drought, and is as nutritious, palatable and as preferred as clover. It is a great companion for clover as it takes over in hot, dry summer weather when clover is flowering or dormant, and uses some of the Nitrogen produced by the legumes. Mix ½ to 1 lb. per acre of clover (best if mixed and seeded at the same time, but frost seeding into existing clover will work) or 3 lbs. per acre alone. Same soil and sun requirements as clover.
BRASSICAS – TURNIPS, RAPE – very economical AND easy to grow!! Annual. Still the best planting for FALL ATTRACTION and WINTER NUTRITION! BRASSICAS are cabbage like plants that include Canola, Sugar Beets, Rape and Turnips commonly planted for wildlife. The greens are highly desirable and palatable to all grazing animals and are high in Protein and Carbohydrates (for stored FAT production) and Phosphorous. They grow well in hot, dry weather and remain green and upright in deep snow. The young plants are bitter tasting and not preferred deer food, so they can mature in areas of moderate deer density. After maturity and/or hard frost they sweeten and become highly desirable to deer. They make great Harvest Plots esp. when planted with a cereal grain or Winter Peas. The roots are eaten through WINTER. I prefer to plant them 8 - 12 weeks before freeze. They can be broadcast into existing corn or sorghum for additional fall forage production. They make a great break crop for loosening the soil on new plots in hard to till areas.
WILDLIFE BRASSICA MIX – annual A proven mix with improved Rape and Turnip varieties for more leaf production and re-growth ability and Purple Top Turnips for good root production. Plant alone or with Grain or Peas. 90+ day maturity. Plant 5 lb/a from mid July through August.
TRUPE’S LATE BRASSICA (Buck Grazer) MIX - Annual Fast maturing varieties (55 to 80 days) for late plantings. Plant alone or into summer annuals such as corn, beans or peas to prolong plot life or plant with winter Wheat or Oats and Winter Peas to double your production. Plant 5 lbs/acre from August through September.
NEW !!! “GROUNDHOG” FORAGE RADISH – annual NEW!!! A better BREAK CROP than Turnips as well as good deer forage. Grows a large deep radish taproot that decomposes quickly in the soil, leaving formerly compacted soil loose, porous and high in available N. Greens are excellent forage throughout the growing season. Plant about 2 months before freeze. Broadcast, drill or plant 1/8” deep at 8 lbs. per acre. Available in 50 pound bag.
TRUPE’S EZ SOW-n-GROW FALL / WINTER / SPRING MIX - Annual. Will last from Fall through Spring. Winter Wheat, Rye or Oats combined with Late Brassica Mix and Austrian Winter Peas is a great hunting season draw and nutritional source from late Summer through Spring. Plant early-August to late September. Cereal grain provides immediate forage while the Brassicas sweeten and produce roots. Wheat will be available again through Spring, Oats freeze out in Winter, except in warmer areas. Winter Peas grow fast and remain green and growing well into Winter. Early planted Oats may go to seed that. 1 bag of Grain, 50 lb. Winter Peas and 5 lbs. Brassicas per acre. Available with Spring Oats or Buck Forage Oats. Wildlife Brassica Mix or Groundhog Forage Radish (will plant 2 acres) optional. See Price List.
WARM SEASON ANNUAL LEGUMES - LabLab, Cow Peas, Soybeans and Austrian Winter
*Peas. All are great sources of Summer Protein and can take pressure off your Clover in the heat of the summer. Soybeans are highly preferred by deer but can easily be destroyed by even moderate grazing. Roundup Ready Soybeans are great for getting control of weeds. *LAB LAB is more drought and grazing resistant than Soybeans and readily climbs corn and sunflower stalks. *RED RIPPER COWPEAS are my favorite. Very economical, highly preferred and very heat, drought and grazing resistant. They can be planted alone or mixed with Corn, Sunflowers, Sorghum, etc. None of the above are frost tolerant. *AUSTRIAN WINTER PEAS are best planted late with Brassicas and Oats. They are frost tolerant and will grow into December if temperatures get into the 50’s. Very Highly Preferred by Deer. They can re-grow after grazing. See price list.
TRUPE’S EZ SOW-n-GROW SUMMER, FALL, WINTER MIX – Annual. This forage will help add significant antler growth and body mass to your deer herd and will fill the need for a high quality, abundant forage in hot, dry weather when clovers are less desirable.
ROUNDUP READY SOYBEANS AND RR CORN. Great weed control with excellent food production from June through Winter. With SUNFLOWERS, BUCKWHEAT and SORGHUM planted in adjacent strips this mix is capable of producing well over 5 tons/acre of high protein, high Phosphorous, highly preferred forage. Add Wildlife Brassica Mix at planting and/or broadcast Late Brassica Mix into this plot in late-Summer for a great double-crop and continued use into Winter. (Weights are approximate as corn is sold by the kernel count – not weight).
BUCKWHEAT –VERY HIGHLY PREFERRED BY DEER, TURKEYS, other BIRDS Annual. Buckwheat is a well-known and widely used summer planting for deer and turkeys. It is inexpensive and easy to grow, even in poor soils. It is also a great soil conditioner and weed suppressor. It can be broadcast on top of the ground with good results. I like to use it for a temporary food / cover on plots that I prepare too late in the Spring for planting clover, then mow it off or till it under and plant clover and/or Brassicas in late Summer. Plant 50 lb/a. any time after danger of frost, through July.
CHUFA – Warm season Annual. Advance Order By April 1 Chufa is a Nutsedge that produces a peanut-like tuber on its roots that Turkeys, Deer and Waterfowl just can’t resist. It generally can be grown anywhere 100 day corn will grow, and requires similar pH (6.0 – 7.0) and fertilization - lots of Nitrogen, in addition to the Potassium and Phosphorous required by legumes. Plant 40 lb/acre 1” deep in loosened soil after danger of frost. Plant at least 1 acre where deer are abundant. Turkeys may find the newly planted “nuts”. Weed control is very important.
INDIVIDUAL BRASSICAS Dwarf Essex (60 day maturity) and Bonar (90 day) RAPE; Purple Top (70 day), Appin (90 day) TURNIPS; Pasja Hybrid Brassica (55day); FORAGE RADISHES; KALE (120 day) and SWEDE (150 day) are also available. See price list.
